Ways to keep cool when it’s hot!

During the summer months, our venues can feel rather warm – which is why we have fans to keep you cool!

But there’s a few more things you can do to beat the heat and prevent any problems during these warmer days.

Hot weather

1 Drink Often
Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in. You can keep hydrated while you sweat by drinking plenty of fluids before, during and after working out. Plain water is the best choice for hydration – sports drinks can be useful for when you are doing high-level endurance sports and need an energy boost but they often contain sugar and are high in calories.

2 Shed the layers
We notice some of you wear a few layers to cover yourself up, but in warmer weather it’s best to don light, loose clothing that is made from breathable material – it helps sweat evaporate and keeps you cooler. If sweat sticks to your skin, it can send  your body temperature even higher.

3 Listen to your body
Working out is never easy and we can expect to feel out of breath and a bit warm, but if you feel any of the following it’s best to take a break!

  • Weakness
  • Light-headedness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Very rapid heartbeat

4 Have a cold shower or bath
Studies have shown that pre-cooling by taking a cold bath or shower before a workout can cool your skin and reduce your core body temperature. Although this sounds strange as we tend to ‘warm up’ before exercising, a cold shower in hot weather is ideal as it reduces the risk of your body’s core temperature rising too quickly.
